This guide applies when Cloudflare is managing the authoritative DNS for the domain. If the domain is registered elsewhere, that is normal: the registrar and DNS provider do not have to be the same company.
Open DNS Records in Cloudflare
- Sign in to the Cloudflare dashboard ↗.
- Select the relevant domain/zone.
- Open DNS, then Records.
- The DNS Records page shows the records currently stored in the Cloudflare zone.
You may see A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT and other record types depending on how the domain is configured. For plain-English background, see What is DNS?, What is an A record? and What is a CNAME record?.
Edit or add a record
To edit an existing DNS record, select Edit on that record, change only the field you were instructed to change, then select Save.
If you have specifically been asked to create a new record, use Add record, choose the requested record type, enter the supplied values and save it.
What does Proxy status mean?
Cloudflare can show a Proxy status control for supported A, AAAA and CNAME records. This affects how Cloudflare handles traffic for that hostname.
Do not switch between Proxied and DNS only by trial and error. If Toolbelt Websites has specified a proxy setting for the record, use that setting. If no setting has been specified and you are unsure, contact support before changing it.
Leave unrelated DNS records alone
Do not remove or alter MX, TXT, SPF, DKIM, DMARC or other records unless the requested change specifically requires it. DNS records often support services beyond the website.
Official Cloudflare resource
Cloudflare also publishes current guidance for this area. If the interface has changed since this Toolbelt Websites guide was updated, use the provider's own documentation as the authoritative interface reference.
