An SSL certificate helps create an encrypted connection between a visitor's browser and the website. In everyday use, this is what allows the website to load over https:// rather than an unsecured connection.
What does SSL do?
SSL helps protect information while it is being sent between the visitor and the website. That is especially important when somebody submits information through a contact or enquiry form.
What will visitors normally see?
Modern browsers normally show an HTTPS address and a secure connection indicator. Browser designs change, so there may not always be a traditional padlock icon.
Is SSL the same as hosting or a domain?
No. Your domain is the web address. Website hosting is the service that makes the site available online. SSL is part of securing the connection to that website.
