DNS propagation is the period after a DNS change when the new information is gradually being picked up across different networks and services. It is one of the reasons a website change can be correct even though not everybody sees the same result immediately.
What does DNS propagation actually mean?
When DNS information changes, the old information can remain temporarily stored in different places around the internet. Those stored copies are replaced over time as they expire and fresh information is requested.
You may hear the word propagation used after changes to DNS records or nameservers. In practical terms, it simply means allowing time for the updated domain information to be seen more widely.
Why can one device show the new website while another shows the old one?
Two devices do not necessarily use the same cached DNS information. Your home broadband, mobile network, office connection or another internet provider may refresh at different times.
Browser, device and network caching can also contribute. For example, a phone using mobile data may show the new website while a laptop on Wi-Fi still shows the previous version for a while.
How long does DNS propagation take?
