If you are not sure where your domain is managed, you can usually narrow it down in a few minutes. The key is knowing the difference between your domain name, the company that manages its registration, and the company that hosts your website.
First, three things that are easy to mix up
The web address people type into their browser, such as smithplumbing.co.uk.
The company responsible for registering and maintaining the domain. This is usually where renewals and core domain settings are managed.
The service that stores the website files and makes the website available online. It can be supplied by a completely different company.
Example: If your plumbing business uses
smithplumbing.co.uk, the company managing that domain may be different from the company hosting the website itself.
How to find your domain provider
Start with the domain name
Use the main address of your website, without
https://or anything after the first slash. For example, usesmithplumbing.co.ukrather than a full page address.Check the domain using ICANN Lookup
ICANN provides a free registration-data lookup service. Enter your domain and review the result for information about the registrar or registration provider.
Look for the registrar details
The registrar is the organisation that holds the registration record for the domain. If a recognisable company is listed, that gives you a strong starting point for finding the correct account or support team.
Check old emails and invoices if the name is unfamiliar
Domains are sometimes bought through a reseller, web designer or hosting company while the registration record shows a different underlying registrar. Search your email for the domain name together with words such as renewal, domain or registration.
Do not assume the registrar is also your website host
A domain lookup tells you about the domain registration. It does not reliably tell you which company hosts the website, manages email, or provides every other service connected to the domain.
Important: If your aim is to find your website hosting company, the registrar result alone may not answer that question. Domain registration and website hosting are separate services, even when one company happens to provide both.
What if I still cannot work it out?
If the lookup result is unclear, check previous domain-renewal emails, bank or card statements, invoices from former web companies, and any account logins you already have. The company you pay to renew the domain is often the practical place to start.
