123 Reg's current public guidance for pointing a domain to an IP address uses the DNS area to add an A record. If an existing A record is being replaced, its guidance says the old record can be deleted before the replacement is added.
Open the DNS area
- Sign in to the 123 Reg Control Panel ↗.
- Find Domains in All Products and Services and select Manage All.
- Select the domain you need to update.
- Select DNS in the domain navigation.
If you need help reaching this screen, see our 123 Reg DNS records guide.
Identify the A record you were asked to change
Confirm the record name or hostname before changing anything. The root domain and www can be represented by separate records, and other subdomains may have their own A records.
Only replace the record that Toolbelt Websites has identified for you.
Replace the A record with the supplied value
- Note the Name of the existing A record you are replacing.
- If that old record must be replaced, use the record's Delete control to remove only that specific A record.
- Select Add New Record.
- Choose A as the record type.
- Enter the same required hostname/name and enter the IP address supplied to you by Toolbelt Websites as the value.
- Leave TTL at its default value unless you have been specifically told to change it.
- Select Save.
Do not delete or alter MX, TXT, CNAME or other A records. 123 Reg's DNS area can contain records for email and other important business services.
After the record is saved
123 Reg currently advises allowing 24–48 hours for DNS record changes to become active. Some networks may refresh earlier than others.
Read what DNS propagation means if the previous website remains visible temporarily.
