Use this guide when Toolbelt Websites has asked you to update a specific A record in Fasthosts. Have the IP address supplied to you by Toolbelt Websites ready before you begin.
Before editing
An A record connects a hostname to an IPv4 address. If you are not sure which A record has been requested, stop and check your instructions rather than guessing.
Update the A record in Fasthosts
- Sign in to the Fasthosts Control Panel ↗.
- Select Domain Names from Hosting & Domains.
- Select the correct domain.
- On the Advanced DNS tile, select Configure Advanced DNS.
- Find the A record Toolbelt Websites has asked you to change and use its current Edit control.
- Enter the IP address supplied to you by Toolbelt Websites in the destination/Points To value for that A record.
- Leave the hostname and unrelated settings unchanged unless your instructions specifically say otherwise.
- Save the record.
Protect the rest of the DNS zone
Do not alter MX, TXT, CNAME or unrelated A records while completing this task. Do not reset the DNS zone. The wrong DNS change can affect both the website and business email.
After the update
Fasthosts notes that DNS changes can take time to become visible because records are cached across the Internet. If the old website still appears for a while, see What is DNS propagation? and How long do DNS changes take?.
