This guide is for a domain whose live DNS records are being managed by GoDaddy. If GoDaddy is not the authoritative DNS provider, make the change with the provider that actually manages the DNS instead.
Before editing the record
Have the exact IP address supplied to you by Toolbelt Websites ready. Do not use an IP address from another guide or guess the destination.
If you are not sure what an A record does, read What is an A record? before changing anything.
Update the A record in GoDaddy
- Sign in to your GoDaddy Domain Portfolio ↗.
- Select the correct domain to open its Domain Settings.
- Select DNS to view the DNS records.
- Find the A record Toolbelt Websites has asked you to change and select Edit beside that record.
- In the Value field, enter the IP address supplied to you by Toolbelt Websites.
- Leave the record name/host and TTL unchanged unless Toolbelt Websites has specifically told you to change them.
- Select Save. If Domain Protection requires identity verification, complete the security step shown by GoDaddy.
Do not change other DNS records
Do not alter MX, TXT, CNAME, AAAA, additional A records or any other DNS entry unless that change has specifically been requested. The wrong change can interrupt the website, email or another connected service.
GoDaddy also notes that if you are trying to change a typical www record, that may be a CNAME rather than the A record for the root domain.
After the update
GoDaddy says most DNS changes take effect within an hour, although they can take up to 48 hours to update globally. Do not keep changing the record because the result is not visible immediately.
