How do I update an A record in IONOS?

This guide is for an A record that is managed in the IONOS DNS settings. Have the exact IP address supplied by Toolbelt Websites ready before making the change.

Before editing the record

Do not guess an IP address and do not copy one from another website. If you are not sure what the record does, read What is an A record? first.

Update the A record in IONOS

1. Sign in to your IONOS account ↗ and open Domains & SSL.
2. For the required domain, open the menu/gear control under Actions and select DNS.
3. Locate the A record Toolbelt Websites has asked you to change.
4. Select the pencil/Edit record control for that A record.
5. In the Points to field, enter the IP address supplied to you by Toolbelt Websites.
6. Leave the hostname and TTL unchanged unless Toolbelt Websites has specifically instructed otherwise.
7. Select Save.

If IONOS shows a service or conflict warning

IONOS can manage some DNS records automatically for active services. If IONOS warns that an existing service manages the hostname or that your change conflicts with another record, do not disable the service or delete related records at random.

Stop and contact Toolbelt Websites support if you are uncertain. Email, website builders, verification services and other products can depend on those records.

Leave unrelated DNS records alone

Do not change MX, TXT, CNAME, AAAA, SRV or additional A records unless those changes have specifically been requested. Customer safety is more important than forcing the record change quickly.

After the update

IONOS says A/AAAA changes are active in IONOS immediately, but can take up to one hour to become visible externally because DNS information is cached across the Internet.
