FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a way of transferring website files between a computer and a web server.
Why might FTP be relevant to a website?
An existing website may have FTP access so authorised people can upload, download or replace files on the hosting account. Toolbelt Websites may occasionally ask about file-transfer access when working with an existing site.
Is FTP the same as SFTP?
No. Traditional FTP is an older protocol and does not provide the same protection for the connection as SFTP. Where the hosting provider supports a secure option, SFTP is generally preferable.
Do not switch protocols or change hosting settings simply because you have seen the term FTP. Use the access method supported by the provider and requested for the task.
What details are normally needed?
File-transfer access typically requires a server or hostname, username, password and sometimes a port number. The exact details vary by provider. See Where can I find my FTP or SFTP details?.
