Plans, Billing & Ownership

Will my website be switched off immediately if a payment fails?

No. A failed subscription payment does not automatically suspend or switch off your website. Toolbelt Websites deliberately keeps billing status and website service status separate.

Why are billing and service status separate?

Payments can fail for ordinary reasons. A card may have expired, a bank may decline a transaction temporarily, or the payment method may simply need updating.

Automatically taking a customer website offline the moment one payment fails would be unnecessarily disruptive. Stripe therefore handles the initial billing-recovery process while the live website remains a separate service decision.

This is particularly important for a business website, where an unnecessary interruption could affect enquiries, advertising campaigns and customers trying to contact the business.

What happens while Stripe tries to recover the payment?

Stripe can retry an eligible failed payment automatically under the current Smart Retries policy and can email the customer about the failed payment. If the card needs changing, the customer can use a secure Stripe-hosted route to update it.

What if the payment remains past due?

If Stripe ultimately cannot recover the payment, the invoice and subscription can remain past due. Toolbelt Websites then considers the account and service position separately.

There is no automatic rule that one failed Stripe payment immediately takes a Toolbelt Websites website offline.

If you receive a failed-payment message, dealing with the payment promptly is still the best way to keep the account straightforward and avoid the issue becoming an ongoing service matter.

The fact that a website is still online should not be taken as confirmation that the invoice has been paid. Stripe billing status and Toolbelt Websites service status answer two different questions.

What should I do if I am unsure?

If you are unsure whether a payment has been recovered or whether any action is needed, contact support@toolbeltwebsites.co.uk. We can check the account status without asking you to send card details to us.
