Forms & Enquiries

What information should my website contact form ask for?

A good contact form asks for enough information to help your business respond, without making a potential customer complete an unnecessary questionnaire.

Start with the information you genuinely need

Common fields include a customer's name, phone number, email address, service required, location or postcode where relevant, and a short message.

The right fields depend on the business and the kind of enquiry you need to qualify.

Use the trade to decide what is useful

A plumbing company may benefit from knowing the customer's name, phone number, postcode, type of plumbing issue and a short description. A landscaper quoting larger projects may need slightly different information.

Avoid unnecessary sensitive information

An ordinary website enquiry form should not ask customers to send passwords, bank details, card information or other highly sensitive information unless a specific form has been designed and approved for that purpose.

Keep the form easy to complete

Every extra field creates another reason for somebody to abandon the form. Ask what your team actually uses when replying. If a phone call is also useful for your business, see Should I display my phone number as well as a contact form?.
