A live website can appear on Google, but going live does not mean that every page will appear in search results immediately. Google first needs to discover the website, crawl its pages and decide what to include in its index.
A live website is not automatically visible in Google straight away
Once your website is publicly available, search engines can begin discovering it. That process is separate from the website going live for normal visitors.
Google uses automated crawlers to discover pages. A page can be online and working correctly before Google has crawled or indexed it.
What is the difference between crawling, indexing and ranking?
- Crawling is when Google visits and reads a page.
- Indexing is when Google processes a page and may add it to its searchable index.
- Ranking is where a page appears for a particular search when Google decides which results are most relevant.
Appearing in Google therefore does not mean a website will immediately rank highly for competitive searches.
How long does it take to appear?
There is no fixed timetable. Google can discover some pages quickly while others take longer, and Google does not guarantee that every page it discovers will be indexed.
It is normal for a new or substantially changed website to need time before its search visibility settles.
What can help Google understand a website?
Clear page structure, useful content, descriptive page titles, sensible internal links and technically accessible pages all help search engines understand a website. A sitemap can also help Google discover URLs, although submitting one does not guarantee indexing or rankings.
Can anyone guarantee a number-one organic ranking?
No legitimate provider can guarantee a specific organic Google position. Rankings depend on Google's systems, the search itself, competition, relevance, location and many other factors outside the control of a website provider.
Good website structure, useful content and ongoing SEO work can improve the foundations for visibility, but they should not be presented as a promise of a particular ranking.
